NYSTAGMUS & CONTACT LENSES

For sufferers of NYSTAGMUS Contact Lenses are often the only efficient method of vision correction!

Nystagmus most commonly causes the eyes to look involuntarily from side to side in a rapid, swinging motion rather than staying fixed on an object or person.  Some nystagmuses, however, cause the eyes to jerk sideways or up and down.

Nystagmus is usually infantile, meaning people have it from a very early age.  Experts say that about one child out of every several thousand has nystagmus.  All forms of nystagmus are involuntary, meaning people with the condition cannot control their eyes.  Nystagmus improves slightly as a person reaches adulthood; however, it worsens with tiredness and stress.

Having nystagmus affects both vision and self-confidence.  Most people with nystagmus have some sort of vision limitations because the eyes continually sweep over what they are viewing, making it impossible to obtain a clear image.  Some nystagmoids  have so many vision problems that they can be considered legally blind.

Both glasses and contact lenses can help people with nystagmus see better, but Contact Lenses are the best alternative for the vast majority who suffer from nystagmus.  With glasses, the eyes sweep back and forth over the lens centres and vision is not as clear.  With Contacts, however, the lens centres move with the eyes so vision is always sharper than with glasses.

The visual improvement Contact Lenses provide can often lift a patients visual acuity to a level which allows them to pass a standard car number plate test and so drive a motor vehicle!
